Beyond Culture Camp: Promoting Healthy Identity in Adoption
featuring Institute Executive Director Adam Pertman and Judy Stigger, LCSW
Wednesday, June 2nd, NOON - 1:30 PM, Central Time
Fee: $25.00 — Approved for 1.5 CEs
Since 1971, nearly a half-million children have been adopted from other countries. Every year, tens of thousands of multiracial families are formed through domestic adoption options like infant, kinship and foster to adopt. The complex issues surrounding transracial and transcultural adoption are profound: for families, for society and for adopted children. Yet, little information on the impact on adoptees from their perspectives existed...until now.
Join Executive Director Adam Pertman for an in-depth look into The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute's groundbreaking research. While Korean Americans (the largest response group) are at the heart of this study, the Institute's review of decades of literature and its examination of transracial adoption from foster care indicate that the recent findings are highly relevant to all trans-racial adoptive families.
Judy Stigger, LCSW will then show you how you can begin to put the most current, most authoritative data available into practice. Uncover why 'being adopted' remains significant throughout one's life, learn how and when various groups integrate race and ethnicity with being adopted to form a cohesive identity.
This webinar is designed to help professionals identify:
- Factors that support, encourage and nurture the development of healthy identity formation for transracial adoptees
- How those factors change as the adoptee ages and matures
- Programs and services that enable adoptees to develop healthy identities
- What type of education is needed for professionals, parents and the public to support health identity formation
