INSTITUTE CELEBRATES PUBLICATION OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NEW BOOK, 'ADOPTION NATION'
NEW YORK, April 4, 2011 - The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute is delighted to announce the publication of Adoption Nation: How the Adoption Revolution is Transforming Our Families - and America, which was written by our Executive Director, Adam Pertman, and which has been reviewed as "the most important book ever written on the subject."
Among the broad array of current, in-the-news topics covered in Adoption Nation are:
THE STEEP DECLINE IN INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS, REFLECTED IN NEW STATE DEPARTMENT STATISTICS AND FUELED BY INCIDENTS SUCH THE "RETURN" OF AN ADOPTED CHILD TO RUSSIA (1ST ANNIVERSARY THIS WEEK).
THE LARGE, ONGOING INCREASES IN ADOPTIONS FROM FOSTER CARE, REPLETE WITH CONTROVERSIES ON ISSUES SUCH AS PARENTING BY GAYS AND LESBIANS AND WHITE PARENTS ADOPTING CHILDREN OF COLOR.
THE HUGE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA LIKE FACEBOOK, AND THE INTERNET IN GENERAL, ON ADOPTION PRACTICES – NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE BETTER – INCLUDING BY ACCELERATING THE TREND TOWARD SEARCHES & REUNIONS.
"This is a smart, compassionate and accessible book that's like no other in the field – informed by strong research and, like the work of the Adoption Institute itself, genuinely useful for everyone from policy-makers to journalists, from practitioners to the people most affected: members of families touched by adoption," said Susan Notkin, President of the Institute Board of Directors.
The Adoption Institute and the book's publisher, Harvard Common Press, will sponsor readings, signings and other public appearances around the country throughout this year to celebrate the book's release, which coincides with the 15th Anniversary of the Institute's founding. "Launch parties" will also be held in New York, Boston and Los Angeles; attendance to these events will be by invitation only.
"There's no exaggerating how much has changed over the last decade since I wrote the first edition of Adoption Nation, and how much is happening in the worlds of adoption and foster care right at this very moment," said Pertman. "When I looked at the landscape shifting in Haiti, Russia, China, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and on and on – as well as the developments in our own country almost every day – I decided I needed to do a thorough rewrite of the book's stories, of the research and of the phenomenon itself."
