ETHICS AND ADOPTION:
CHALLENGES FOR TODAY AND THE FUTURE

FACULTY MEMBER BACKGROUND

Dr. Elias Lefferman

Dr. Lefferman was the director of the adoptions program at Vista Del Mar for over ten years, during which he placed over 1,300 children into permanent homes. He has been a proponent of open adoptions, which Vista has practiced since 1976, and has focused his efforts on providing parents with the information they will need in order to create a psychologically healthy living environment for their family. He currently serves as the Director of Clinical Services, overseeing the agency's clinical programs, and has worked to heighten clinician sensitivity to foster and adoptive issues, such as the effects of early loss, separation and trauma as well as open adoptive practices. Dr. Lefferman has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He helped establish Collaborative adoption practice in California and implemented Identified Adoptions before they became legally sanctioned in the state.
