FACULTY MEMBER BACKGROUND

Mary J. Risling

Mary Risling, Esq. (Hupa, Yurok, Karuk; Enrolled member Hoopa Valley Tribe) has a B.S. in Political Science and a J.D., both from the University of California at Davis. She is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Courts within California, the U.S. Court of Claims and various Tribal Courts. She is the directing attorney at the Eureka office of California Indian Legal Services (CILS), where she engages in Federal, State and Tribal administrative and judicial practice, with emphasis in federal Indian law. She conducts training on specialized legal and Indian law issues for tribes, state federal agencies and other organizations. She has served on the California Judicial Council's Family and Juvenile Law Standing Advisory Committee, which identifies issues and concerns confronting the California judiciary regarding cases involving family and children and suggests appropriate responses. She is the author of the recently completed California Judges Benchguide - The Indian Child Welfare Act.
