Media Advisory: For Immediate Release

NEW YORK, November 16, 2011 – The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute is proud to announce that Martha J. Henry, Ph.D. – a respected and accomplished educator, trainer and author in the fields of adoption and foster care – is joining our staff as Education Director, effective immediately.

The responsibilities of this new position will include oversight, management, research and outreach relating to a wide range of Institute initiatives, including professional trainings, website and newsletter content, and programs and projects such as Educate the Educators and Adoption in the Media.

Dr. Henry comes to the Institute after four years as the Director of the Office for Foster Care and Adoption (formerly the Center for Adoption Research) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She assumed that position after three years as its Director of Education and Training.

Among her publications, Dr. Henry is the co-author of Adoption in the United States: A Reference for Families, Professionals and Students (Lyceum Books, 2009). Dr. Henry, a developmental psychologist, also has given numerous presentations and trainings nationally, and has taught in the Department of Pediatrics at UMass Medical School and the Department of Psychology at Suffolk University.

“Bringing Martha onto our staff is an affirmation of the high caliber of work we expect to keep doing at the Adoption Institute,” said Executive Director Adam Pertman. “It’s also a clear signal that we intend to expand that work and its impact – and Martha is just the right person to help us do so.”

Dr. Henry said she was “enthusiastic and excited” about her new position. “I don’t think any organization in our country does more important work to systemically improve the lives of the millions of people for whom adoption is an everyday reality,” she said. “I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to join such a vital organization, work with such esteemed colleagues, and contribute to its successes.”

In addition to her work with the Institute, Dr. Henry is the founder of MJ Henry & Associates, which specializes in education and consultation services that support children, youth and families. For a more-complete biography, go to
