Media Advisory: For Immediate Release
NEW YORK – November is National Adoption Awareness Month, and never before has the issue been more relevant and important in our society. Adam Pertman, head of the pre-eminent adoption policy, research and education organization in the U.S., explains that a gamut of significant issues illustrates a growing “revolution” in adoption and foster care in our country. Put simply, adoption is profoundly affecting tens millions of lives, and more by the day.
“Whether it’s another warm and wonderful search and reunion story in the news, another celebrity adoption from Africa, another abandoned infant left in a horrible place, another heart-warming account about an adoption from China, or another state effort to find loving families for children in foster care – the adoption revolution surrounds us,” said Pertman, Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute. “We haven’t fully understood its scope yet, but it’s clear that the impact is growing both on our society generally and on the personal lives of Americans everywhere.”
During National Adoption Month, the Adoption Institute will release a study entitled, “Safeguarding the Rights and Well-Being of Birth Parents.” This unprecedented research comes on the heels of a major Institute report on how schools can better serve children who were adopted or in foster care, and another high-profile examination of the growing trend of adoption by gays and lesbians.
Pertman and the Adoption Institute regularly provide reliable, research-based information and interviews to journalists and policy-makers on such issues as:
- Laws and policies that prohibit or inhibit adoption and foster parenting by gays and lesbians.
- Sperm and egg donation, “embryo adoption,” and other new reproductive technologies.
- The garowing phenomena of “open adoption” and reunions of adoptees and birth families.
- Ongoing problems – and effective new remedies – in foster care systems nationwide.
- The burgeoning, radically changing worlds of international and interracial adoption.
A new, updated “Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute Special Edition” of Pertman’s ground-breaking book Adoption Nation: How the Adoption Revolution is Transforming America is being released for National Adoption Month; it has been reviewed as “the most important book ever written on the subject.” Pertman also has contributed chapters to three additional new books, on subjects ranging from his personal experience as an adoptive father to an examination of the media’s portrayal of adoption.
The Institute itself is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with unique new initiatives including:
- Adoption in the Schools: A Lot to Learn
- The Adoptive Parents Preparation Project
- Beyond Culture Camp: Promoting Positive Identity for Adoptees
- Safeguarding the Rights and Well-Being of Birthparents
- Expanding Resources for Children: Gay and Lesbian Adoption
The Adoption Institute is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit national organization. Its mission is to provide leadership that improves laws, policies and practices – through sound research, education and advocacy – in order to better the lives of everyone touched by adoption, especially children.
